slowPOK aims to build inclusive relationships in the City of Poughkeepsie by crafting and sharing stories from the past that generate insights and inform a future where all of us can thrive.
We discover, develop, interpret, and share place-based stories of significance from time to time on walking tours of the City of Poughkeepsie, looking for stories that include these key components:
The inaugural slowPOK tour was held on November 4, 2017.
FOUNDERS
slowPOK was founded by two residents of a neighborhood not far from the river and train station they lovingly refer to as Interbro (between the bridges):
Kafui Attoh's interest in exploring Poughkeepsie's past stems from his broader fascination with cities and urbanization. A proud denizen of "Interbro," Kafui believes in the power of public history to humanize our cities and to build connections across difference.
Susan Grove is interested in sharing / interpreting certain kinds of historical events tied to Poughkeepsie, finding researched events and retelling them live in a way that makes them accessible and memorable to wider audiences, conveys the immediacy of circumstances unfolding according to the constrained / empowered agency of the people involved, and generates interest / insight into political-economic-social forces and context in order to reveal choices we can make as we chart our course as a community.
STORYTELLERS
